ICAR- KVK Imphal West kick concluded the three days training programme cum input distribution on production technology of groundnut under NEH Programme sponsored by ICAR-IIGR, Junagadh Gujarat

A three-day training program on the production technology of groundnut under the NEH Programme, sponsored by ICAR-IIGR, Junagadh, Gujarat, was conducted. The training program aimed to impart scientific knowledge on groundnut cultivation, agronomical practices, and disease and pest management, with a focus on food and nutritional security, poverty alleviation, and self-employment. Dr. Laishram Kanta Singh, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK Imphal West, presided over the inaugural session. In his address, he emphasized the importance of cultivating valuable and suitable crops for livelihood and income generation. He also affirmed that the market demand for oilseeds can be partially met by farming suitable oilseed crops in the region. Dr. Lydia Zimik, KVK Scientist (Agronomy), spoke on agronomical practices for the healthy growth and good yield of groundnut. She highlighted the importance of groundnut cultivation for edible oil production, post-harvest technology, and income generation. Dr. Thokchom Motilal, KVK Scientist (Agricultural Extension), stressed that successful cultivation depends on adopting improved practices, scientific management, and farmer awareness. He also encouraged cluster farming at the community level to produce edible oil and promote value addition through self-help groups (SHGs) for income generation. Dr. Salam Gunamani Singh, KVK Scientist (Plant Breeding & Genetics), discussed quality seed production and selection for future plantations. He emphasized the importance of choosing high-yielding, drought-tolerant, and disease-resistant varieties, particularly those with desirable oil quality traits such as high oleic acid for better shelf life and health benefits. He also noted that genetic research focuses on resistance to aflatoxin contamination, a major challenge in groundnut storage. Dr. Kangabam Suraj S., KVK Scientist (Plant Protection), covered disease and pest management and demonstrated seed treatment before planting groundnut. He emphasized that plant protection ensures healthy crops, better yields, and safe food. He advised farmers that collaboration between scientists and farmers is essential to spread modern plant protection techniques. The entire program was coordinated by Dr. Lydia Zimik and concluded with the distribution of groundnut seed to the participants.
